MODULE 3:
Ups and Downs in the Healing Process

According to the World Health Organization, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

What that means is that health is a complete picture of every part of you, and sometimes you will experience symptoms as you are in the process of creating optimal physical, mental, and social well-being, aka health!

Life and health are not always sunshine and ponies…and thank God for that! If your body didn’t tell you when you were stepping on a nail THAT would be a problem! A myriad of negative consequences could occur, if you couldn’t feel things that were hurting you, damaging you, and causing problems. The result would be MASSIVE damage! If you ate some bad food, and you didn’t vomit it out, that would cause worse problems. The result would be food poisoning and possible death! If you inhale a virus or bacteria, and you don’t immediately sneeze or cough to “return it to sender”, or if you don’t turn on a fever to activate your immune system and cook the invaders… there would be bigger problems. You surely get the point!

Remembering to Relax

Sometimes you’ll feel tired as your body is remembering how to relax, and as it is reallocating your energy to heal long-standing damage. Sometimes you’ll feel pain, queasiness, sniffles, grumpy, angry, sad, fearful, and so on. And, sometimes you’ll feel energized, excited, inspired, alive, vibrant, joyful, compassionate, and so on. Health itself is a process, so the act of getting healthier would be best viewed as a process, as well.

Adaptability is the fundamental part to all of this. You can flex and flow with changes – changes in your body, in your structure, in your emotions, in your thoughts, in your roles, and in your life. The healthier you become, the more you can ride the waves of life. You can surf through the low times, so they don’t last as long. And you can enjoy the up times, without being afraid of losing them, because you know that as they go, they WILL come again.

Comprehending

One of the most important pieces of your healing process starts by developing a trusting relationship with your body and your nerve system. As your body and nerve system heal, going through this process, different kinds of experiences will come up. The communication superhighways of your nerves, and your brain’s ability to receive the messages from those nerves, is getting turned back on. As such, you will feel things you have not felt before, things you like, and things you don’t like.

What’s awesome about this process is two-fold:

  • You can only feel what you’re ready to heal
  • What your nerve system can feel, it can mobilize energy to heal
If you can’t find it, you can’t fix it. This means that you will start to heal better and feel better as your body gets to work on things. You may sometimes feel more tired as your nerve system remembers how to relax, or as it’s mobilizing your energy to clean up stuff that has been building up while the signals were disconnected. You may also sometimes feel more energized and alive as your body’s coordinating systems are turning back on! So, be mindful of the shifts that are happening, and give yourself permission to actually listen to your body.
